Although the information is not officially confirmed, several reports seem to indicate that the United States is preparing to deploy a THAAD anti-ballistic missile defense battery on the Ramstein base, officially to counter the threat of Iranian Shahab-3 ballistic missiles.

However, this decision comes as Russia appears to have permanently deployed SS-26 Iskander missiles in the Kaliningrad enclave, information officially denounced by the Lithuanian Prime Minister at the beginning of the year. The THAAD is intended to intercept intermediate-range ballistic missiles with a range not exceeding 1500 km, with maneuvering and deception capabilities, as is the case with the Iskander.

This announcement will not be likely to reduce tension in Eastern Europe, especially as it comes a week after Poland officially proposed to the United States to permanently deploy an armored division on its territory. , with a Polish financial contribution of up to €2 billion.

Above all, it shows that, when it comes to facing a serious, so-called high-intensity threat, Europeans today have no other choice than to appeal to the United States. As I have already said, this is where the real obstacle lies in the creation of a European Defense initiative going beyond the framework of the symbol, and as long as one or more European countries have not put in place a military force capable of responding to this type of threat, American omnipresence will be unavoidable in Europe.
