The Chinese aviation industry has benefited greatly from Western know-how over the past 30 years, especially in the field of helicopters, with the fruitful partnership between Eurocopter (Airbus Helicopter), which will give birth to the entire range of modern helicopters in service in the Chinese armies. But with the growing polarization of international relations, China is now turning to another partner, Russia, to build its new heavy helicopter, especially as the know-how in the field of the manufacturer Mil is well established.

Le new Chinese helicopter will therefore be of the 40 ton class, and will be able to carry a load of 15 tons at 600 km at a speed of 300 km / h. The prototype is expected to fly by 2022, and China plans to build 200 examples.

With this program, China will gain a foothold in the very closed circle of heavy helicopter manufacturers, which today only includes the United States (CH-47 and CH-53), and Russia with the Mil-Mi26. Europe, although a consumer of this type of helicopter, has never sought to produce its own model, preferring to buy its CH-53 (Germany) or its Ch-47 Chinook (United Kingdom, Netherlands, etc.) from UNITED STATES. However, there are more than 100 CH-47s in service in European armies, 80 CH-53s in the German army which plans to replace them with 60 new aircraft. The overall European potential, including France, the Eastern countries and Scandinavian states, would therefore exceed 200 units. Plenty of money to make a study and an industrial line profitable….
