Naval Group has finalized the development of its second generation AIP technology

The French shipbuilder Naval Group has announced the end of the development of its new anaerobic propulsion technology for submarines, allowing conventionally powered submersibles to remain submerged for up to 3 weeks. The manufacturer was thus able to test this technology during an 18-day dive, validating all the choices of this second generation of fuel cells that are more powerful, safer, and easier to maintain.

With this announcement, Naval Group takes a dominant position in the field of AIP submarines, especially since, according to the manufacturer, this technology can be implemented in all submarines with conventional diesel propulsion, which opens it up, at beyond new markets, immense possibilities in terms of Retrofit of existing fleets.

This announcement comes at the right time, as the French group is positioning itself in India on the P75i program, involving 6 AIP submarines with ocean capabilities. However, if the French have recognized know-how in terms of ocean submarines, their mastery of AIP technology was generally considered inferior to that of the Germans and the Swedes, who use this technology on their own submersibles. From now on, Naval Group will be able to offer the best in naval submarine design, with the most advanced AIP technology available today.
