Nexter's VBCI contract in Qatar for 2 billion euros would be under serious threat

The VBCI contract for the acquisition of 490 Armored Infantry Combat Vehicles by Qatar, publicly announced almost two years ago, would be in very bad shape, according to Michel Cabirol, from the economic site La Tribune.

In question, the indictment of the CEO of the Parisian football club PSG, Nasser Al-Khelaïfi, also very close to the Emir of Qatar, Sheikh Tamim Bin Hamad Al Thani, for corruption of referees by the French judicial authorities .

In retaliation, the Emir of Qatar is said to have ordered the Ministry of Defense to launch a new program to replace Nexter's VBCIs, to which the Finnish Patria, the American General Dynamics and the Italian OTO Melara have already responded.

Despite the trip of Florence Parly, the Minister of the French Armed Forces, on Monday November 25 to Qatar, a final attempt to save this strategic €2 billion contract, and the results of which are unknown, optimism was not in order at Nexter, nor at the Hôtel de Brienne.

The French authorities find themselves in a very delicate situation to manage, with on the one hand a very significant industrial cost in the event of the cancellation of a contract which represents more than 25.000 jobs/year for the French economy, On the other hand, according to the republican principle of the separation of powers, it is not conceivable to cancel the procedure initiated by the judicial authorities to give in to the Emir of Qatar.
