In 2018, France increased its military budget by €1,7 billion, an annual increase of 5%. What was presented as a significant effort is, in fact, in line with increases in global spending on defense equipment. Indeed, global defense industries (excluding China) recorded a 2018% increase in their turnover in 4,6 compared to 2017, reaching $420 billion, according to the annual study published by the Swedish think tank SIPRI. After a period of marked deflation between 2010 and 2015, and a very slight recovery between 2015 and 2017, 2018 therefore marks the return to rapid progression of Defense investments on a planetary scale, in a dynamic which will not have surprised observers of the global geopolitical tensions that have emerged in recent years.
American companies appear to be the big winners from these credit increases, concentrating on their own 59% of global spending, for $246 billion, an annual increase of 7,2%. Consequences, 43 American companies are ranked among the 100 companies with the highest revenues in defense in 2018. Lockheed Martin, Boeing, Northrop Grumman, Raytheon and General Dynamics form the Top 5 of the largest global companies in the defense sector, together accounting for more than 50% of the volume recorded in the United States and 30% of the global volume.
