The scope of European sanctions concerning deliveries of weapons and defense systems to Turkey following the offensive against the Kurdish YPG forces in northern Syria, and the acquisition of S400 anti-aircraft system batteries from Russia, has been the subject of numerous questions. Yet it appears that these same sanctions are now threatening the execution of several major defense programs of the Turkish defense industry. We have already reported the consequences of a probable France refuses to deliver certain technologies as part of the development of an anti-aircraft system derived from the Franco-Italian SAMP-T Mamba. But two other critical programs are now threatened with very significant delays, even thoughAnkara now threatens to close NATO bases on its soil if the sanctions were not lifted.
The German engine manufacturer MTU has suspended the delivery of diesel engines in front of the new heavy Altay battle tank developed by the firm Otokar in cooperation with Qatar and help from South Korean Hyundai. At the same time, the tank transmission, designed in Germany by RENK, was also suspended by Berlin.
