With a defense budget having increased by 16% in 2020, the Indonesian armies have increased resources to modernize their equipment, in a context of growing tensions with China under the cover of territorial claims in the China Sea. In addition to the air forces negotiating to acquire new combat aircraft , the Indonesian Navy is also accelerating its planning to modernize its buildings. In this case, the Indonesian authorities announced this week that they had selected the company Thales and the European missile manufacturer MBDA to modernize the light frigate KRI Usman-Harun , one of the three units of the Bung-Tomo class. The modernization of the two other frigates, the KRI Bung Tomo and KRI Usman Harun, will take place soon, once the necessary $60 million budget has been released.
Concretely, it is the Dutch subsidiary of Thales which was awarded a contract to modernize the detection and electronic protection capabilities of the Indonesian ship, which will receive a TACTICOS combat management system, a SMART-S Mk2 surveillance radar , a STIR EO Mk2 radar, the Vigile Mk2 electronic defense system as well as Electro-optical fire control systems. For its part, MBDA received a mandate to bring the MM40 anti-ship missiles already equipping the ship to standard block 3, as well as the delivery of short-range VL MICA anti-aircraft missiles to equip the 16 vertical launch silos in place on vessel.
