B-1B bombers may carry hypersonic missiles in the near future

As we had already talked about on Meta-Defense, the US Air Force should reduce its fleet of B-1B Lancer supersonic heavy bombers next year, by removing 17 aircraft out of the sixty still in service today. However, the Air Force Global Strike Command (AFGSC), which manages the USAF strategic bombers, does not intend to leave its B-1B fleet abandoned while awaiting the arrival of the new B- stealth bomber. 21.

On the contrary, after general timothy ray, commander of AFGSC, the Lancer remaining in service should be equipped in the coming years with new offensive capabilities. On the agenda, we would find in priority the new hypersonic missile AGM-183 ARRW (Air-launched Rapid Response Weapon, or Arrow). However, the possibility of carrying new cruise missiles both in the aircraft holds and under external carrying points was also raised.
