India bans import of 101 defense equipment, including submarines or light fighters

The announcement is surprising. Indeed, through the voice of Minister of Defense Rajnath Singh, the Indian government has just announced the progressive ban on importing no less than 101 major defense equipment, ranging from sniper rifles to destroyer, equipment that will be phased out between 2020 and 2025. According to the Indian Minister of Defense who spoke on his tweeter account, the objective is both to achieve strategic autonomy including The need was highlighted by the Covid19 crisis, and to stimulate the Indian economy, which is also suffering from the economic consequences of the health crisis.

The list of proscribed equipment will be revised each year, with the potential addition of equipment as soon as the replacement solutions become effective. In order to mark the spirits, the first tranche of equipment that cannot be imported includes light fighters, which will therefore be banned from December of this year, while submarines with conventional propulsion will be banned a year later. According to the Indian authorities, the country spent around 4 lakh crore, or around $ 50 billion, between April 2015 and August 2020, to import the equipment listed in the government list, representing a very significant shortfall for the Indian industry. and, consequently, for the country's public finances.
