We know that the Greek press is not short of spectacular declarations , which sometimes lack materiality. But the information published today by the site pagenews.gr , if it is just as spectacular, has the merit of being consistent with the geostrategic developments underway in the Eastern Mediterranean. According to the site, French President Emmanuel Macron and Greek Prime Minister Kyriakos Mitsotakis have reached an agreement for France to supply Athens with 10 Rafale in the latest F3R standard, as well as 8 Rafale of an older standard (unspecified). , probably F2 or F3), the latter aircraft being taken from aircraft currently in service with the French air forces to be given, and not sold, to Greece.
The objective of this decision would obviously be to provide the Greek air forces with a first capability on short notice based on the Rafale , capable in particular of deploying stand-off weapons such as the Scalp EG cruise missile, while having a large range of action, and very modern electronics, including the SPECTRA self-protection system. It would also be a question of marking without the slightest doubt France's positions alongside Greece in the ongoing crisis in the Eastern Mediterranean , facing Turkey. In addition, this would give Paris an excellent reason to deploy a larger number of Rafale and logistical resources in Greece, and to carry out numerous and repeat flights over the Aegean Sea, since it will be a question of training the Greek crews.
