It seems that a schism is being created between the political class and the public opinion of the countries of the north of Europe, in particular as regards questions of defense. A recent Dutch poll shows, in fact, that 72% of the Dutch trust France and Germany more for international and Defense issues, while only 10% prefer to keep their faith in Washington. A remarkable evolution in the positions of Batavian public opinion which was, until now, a pillar of European attachment to the United States.
Is European public opinion evolving faster than the positions of its political representatives? It is quite possible, if we judge by the results of certain polls recently published in Europe. Thus, in March this year, a German poll showed that 60% of those questioned wanted greater rapprochement between France and Germany on international and defense issues. The recent Dutch poll shows the reasons for this turnaround which seems more massive than it seems, or at least than the political elites perceive. Indeed, according to 79% of Dutch people, it is likely that the United States will disengage militarily, at least partially, from Europe.
