Decidedly, the United States seems determined to keep Athens in its nets when it comes to defense equipment. Indeed, according to the Defense News website, the US authorities have once again presented a new offer to their Greek counterparts with the aim of "co-producing" 4 new frigates for the Hellenic Navy, once again relying on Greek shipyards which have come under American control Onex Shipyards. This announcement comes as the Greek authorities have announced their desire to modernize their Meko200 corvettes, and to launch a procedure for the acquisition of 2 or 4 light frigates from European manufacturers, while continuing negotiations around the acquisition of 2 FDI frigates from Naval Group.
The frigate model proposed by the United States has not been confirmed by the statements of the American ambassador to Greece, Geoffrey Pyatt, who visibly personally oversees this initiative. According to Defense News, this is unlikely to be Fincantieri's new Italian FREMM-derived frigate, recently selected to be the first installment of the US Navy's FFG / X program. It would therefore, in all probability, be news of an offer based on the Multi-Mission Surface Combattant light frigates, derived from the Freedom-class Littoral Combat Ships built by Marinette Marine, and sold to Saudi Arabia.
