Sikorsky drops Leonardo in naval helicopter business in South Korea

DAPA, the South Korean defense equipment acquisition and development authority, has just announced that it has accepted the offer from the American company Sikorsky for 12 MH-60R naval helicopters to equip its KDX-III destroyers and the FFX Batch III frigates from 2025. This is an important turnaround, since until recently, the Italian Leonardo and its AW159 was considered the overwhelming favorite of the competition, having already been selected under the previous program, with eight of its helicopters sold to the South Korean Navy under the MOH Batch 1 program in 2012. NH Helicopters' NH90 also failed to establish itself in the market .
