Ukraine's flip-flop against the acquisition of Motor Sich by the Chinese Skyrizon

In December 2019, the Ukrainian group UkrOboronProm endorsed the 50% of the shares of the engine manufacturer Motor Sich to two Chinese groups, the Xinwei group and the Skyrizon Aircraft group, via the company Tianjiao Aviation Industry Investment Co. For the Ukrainian company which notably manufactures the D-18 turbojet which powers the Antonov An-124 and An-225, or the D-346 turbojet engine which equips the Yak-46 and An-72, it was a breath of fresh air in a most deleterious economic climate. But for many foreign observers, it was above all an excellent operation for Beijing, which is still struggling to appropriate the very advanced technology of modern turbojets.

Following the scandal concerning the pressure exerted on Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky by Donald Trump in an attempt to compromise the son of his political opponent, and now President of the United States, Joe Biden, Washington had remained rather discreet on this subject, just like It was the Europeans, who are of little interest to aircraft manufacturers and defense industries in Eastern European countries. But since the arrival of Joe Biden at the White House, things have visibly changed, and the Ukrainian presidency has come out of its reserve to oppose this acquisition.
