Founder of open-source intelligence site Oryx throws in the towel

If there is one website that has played a strategic role since the beginning of the conflict in Ukraine, it is undoubtedly oryxspioenkop.com, better known as Oryx. Indeed, since the first hours of combat, the site and its team of volunteers have methodically analyzed and listed the photos, videos and documents published on social networks, to create a database of material losses on both sides.

Although the site has been around since 2014, and had already been noticed during the Nagorno-Karabakh war in 2020 by carrying out an exhaustive analysis of the losses listed on both the Azeri and Armenian sides, it was undoubtedly the Ukrainian conflict that propelled it to the forefront, to the point that it became the favorite reference of many media, but also senior policy makers.

The duration of this war, and the colossal work linked to the immense losses recorded by the Russian and Ukrainian forces, ended up erode the resolve of the authors, who have however committed to continue the analysis until October, with the slim hope that the fighting will be over by then.

Beyond a remarkable source of information for who wanted to keep informed about this conflict, the Oryx site was also a first-rate tool to counter propaganda and denials on the losses recorded by both sides. , depriving the Kremlin of many levers after a certain captive audience in Europe as well as across the Atlantic, and even beyond.

The fact is, there is little doubt, that this source was the most effective counter-propaganda initiative carried out on the Western side during this conflict, especially since its independent nature guaranteed its objectivity and therefore its scope. statistical, but also political.
