Ukraine to rapidly renew fighter jets

The Military Council of the Ukrainian Air Force Command recently approved its new forward-looking plan, the Air Force Vision 2035. This document finally validates the acquisition of new combat aircraft for the Ukrainian air forces, which suffer both from the age of its aircraft and from enormous maintenance difficulties. Indeed, most Ukrainian aircraft are of Russian or Soviet origin. However, since the annexation of Crimea by Russia, Moscow is logically no longer considered a reliable supplier for the Ukrainian armed forces.

For the first time, the future pillar of Ukrainian air defense will therefore not be a MiG or a Sukhoi. As we mentioned in a previous articleUkraine could, however, set its sights on an aircraft with an obvious Russian heritage, in this case the Sino-Pakistani JF-17. Depending on the finances available, Kiev could also be interested in Gripen NG Swedish, as well as the American F-16V, in great demand in Eastern Europe. We know that negotiations have already taken place in recent years with both Saab and Lockheed Martin, without ever succeeding because of the price of new planes sold.

The Sino-Pakistani JF-17 could seduce the Ukrainian force for its excellent value for money and its logistics similar to that of Russian planes currently in use. But the F-16V, potentially based on upgraded second-hand cells, could have political ascendancy.
