Although in 2022, the production of new tanks by the Russian military industry was almost at a standstill while combat losses were very severe, the efforts from the summer of 2022 to transform and modernize this tool produced the first concrete effects from the beginning of 2023. Rapidly, the production of new T-90Ms, but also and especially of T-72B3Ms based on armored vehicles in cocoon, increased to equalize and then compensate for the losses recorded in Ukraine from the beginning of 2024.

This modernization effort now appears to have reached its limit, as recent assessments indicate a potential monthly production of 35 T-90M/M2, T-72B3M, and T-80BVM tanks, enabling the Russian mechanized corps to receive more than 3,000 main battle tanks (MBTs) over the next ten years. However, this potential is subject to numerous uncertainties, both regarding the quantities produced and the corps' actual effectiveness in the years to come.

The T-90M tanks barely compensate for Russian losses estimated at up to 2,800 units.

Between 2022 and 2024, several assessments converge on a total of 2,200 to 2,800 Russian main battle tanks destroyed or neutralized. According to these same estimates, this volume represents nearly 80% of the operational tanks present in units before the conflict. Thus, the deployed fleet has suffered exceptional attrition, impacting unit availability and rotation. This level of depletion necessitates rapid replacements and the return to service of immobilized equipment, with visible effects on brigade structure and reserve depth.
